Being Seen
Because of cultural bias, people sometimes feel like they don’t belong, which can lead to being torn between different identities. Individuals are judged for their accents, clothes, names, or skin tones but they just want to be seen for who they are. For some people the effort to blend in means losing part of themselves.

Hyunseo’s photograph shows that we all want to be seen for who we are. By thinking of migrants as a group, we can lose sight of individual people and their stories.
Who we are can be complicated, especially when we look back at our own family histories and stories of migration. Identity is something Ella has tried to address in her work.
